How Can
It Work For You?
The
concept is simple - we have to re-train our
brain to change our behaviour. Nobody acts in a
random fashion. We all respond to stimuli
(sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) from things
around us. But here's the secret - we respond in
ways that are dictated by our
brain. Some things are learned way back in early
childhood, others like smoking or over-eating
are acquired later. |
Not Only
Physical
And it's
not just our bodies that have been trained to
act the way we do, it's our emotional and
psychological side as well. Certain things will
trigger a reaction in our brain and affect our
behaviour. A good example is the frustration we
feel when we're stuck in traffic. |
It's Human
nature
What
makes our behavioural issues worse is that the
vast majority of people always choose the
easiest solution between choices. Why not - it
makes sense in many situations. For example if
you could get to your destination by walking up
a very steep hill or by walking around it which
one do you chose?
Where
this ingrained logic really let's us down is
when we need to change our behaviour. Which is
easier to do - reach for our favorite ice cream
or eat an apple? This is the crux of the
problem. We have to re-program our brain to
automatically reach for the apple in this
example.
In
other words get your brain to tell you how to
act (the way you would like.
If you can do
this you will definitely achieve the things you
want to in life.

But How
Can
We Do This?
There
are several proven methods you can use to change the
way your thought processes work:

Visualization

Hypnosis / Self hypnosis

Positive Affirmations

1.
Visualization
This
simply means picturing in your mind the thing
that you want to achieve. Pro -athletes are very
aware of this technique. They know if they visualize
themselves crossing the finish line, or hitting
the golf ball just right, etc, this can
actually help them in the real-life event. Some
people use pictures and photos of things they
want to achieve and then look at these
frequently to re-enforce the message. |
2.
Hypnosis / Self hypnosis
A
very powerful way to change your behaviour.
Hypnosis provides a way to re-program the the
subconscious mind to help change the way we
consciously think and act. The power of hypnotic
suggestion is well known, and has many positive
applications like increasing confidence,
quitting smoking, and overcoming fears. |
3.
Positive Affirmations
Are
another popular method for modifying our
thoughts in order to improve our lives. The
affirmations are usually short phrases framed in
a positive way that we can read or listen to
frequently. A good example would be 'I will
become a non-smoker' rather than "I will stop
smoking'. Constant repetition of these
affirmations will register on your inner self
will result in changing your beliefs. |
Repetition...
is the key to
success.
If
you do something often enough, it becomes a
habit. After that, you continue to
repeat the behaviour without consciously
thinking about it. Driving to work is a great
example - you keep a watchful eye on the traffic
but you find the way there automatically.
So,
when you do want to make changes in your life
you have to repeat the new behaviour a
sufficient number of times until it becomes
habitual. This is the hard part of the
change process. For instance, many people write
down their goals in detail, and look at them a
few times but then gradually forget about them.

None of the above three techniques (or even all
three together) will work for you unless you get
to the habit-forming stage. |

There
are several tools available to help you reach
this stage. Here are a few:
Self
Hypnosis:
This
can be in the form of CD's, or MP3 files or
video. Usually you will listen to a hypnotist
who will put your mind relaxed state and then
talk about a specific issue or problem you are
trying to resolve.
Subliminal
Messages:
These
are like self hypnosis CD's or MP3 files, except
the messages are too fast to be captured by the
conscious mind. Instead they register directly
on the subconscious.
